28 Apr 10 Passion and audacity in the job search

If you’re passionate in your job search, it shows. If you have a goal, a targeted opportunity you’re zealously pursuing, it’s obvious. You cannot hide it.

Like this guy, who wants to work for U2.

Click here to watch the embedded video, if you cannot see it.

He’s even got a Facebook page that you can join to help him in his journey.

Hat-tip to Cliff Ravenscraft from GSPN.tv for the link via Google Buzz.

This annoys me… some of us (dare I say most of us) do not want to pick up a guitar and follow a rock band round the world. Many people have real passion, love and colour in their lives anyway, but still need a job, which might not involve all the passion, enthusiasm and fulfillment desired in a wider sense. The fact that some guy here is picking up his guitar and following his dream is slightly annoying and not representative of the situation or options facing the vast majority of job seekers out here IMO.

The implication that those of us with less harebrained approach to work are somehow less worthy seems to me unhelpful. The problem for some of us (at least for myself) in this context is that I need to get a job to support life, I do what I say and have integrity, have made perfectly adequate compromise in the past and have references to prove it, but cannot generate the sort of “passion” and “zeal” you refer to for any practical possibility as it stands.

What about something which says to employers “forget all these passionate, zealous rock-band-chasing loonies, a realistic appreciation at the outset of the compromise to be made is a good basis for a valuable long-term arrangement”

Anyway, of all the musical ambitions, pursuit of U2 is pretty lame to me – what about the cutting edge? what about roots and passion in music, not just turgid & bloated soft rockers? bah humbug…
