Having been around the blogging community for eight years now, this blog (and the Blogspot-hosted one that preceded it) have enough content that makes it stand out in search results for certain keywords. I also have made myself accessible through this blog.

Since I have been getting more emails lately from individuals asking for advice, I feel that it’s important that I help clarify what it is that I’m doing over here so you know what to expect from me.

Clarifying expectations

This blog is something I’ve done as a hobby, out of a desire to share what I’ve found interesting or useful in my own job searches and career development.

I am just a guy who writes this blog in his free time. Much less free time, now that I’m back in the workforce, since earlier this year. (I’m sure you agree that this is a very good thing.)

I am not an expert on SCOTI, or as it’s better known, Ohio Means Jobs, even though this blog post remains the most popular one here and continues to rank highly in search engines. (As far as I know, when you register for unemployment benefits, you’re registered for this program. Check with your state unemployment representative for more details.)

Whatever I share in this blog or in response to personal emails from the Contact page is simply my own opinions, which come with no express or implied guarantees.

Whenever you contact me through this blog or via email, you understand these things and are comfortable with them.

Now that we have an understanding, I’d still love to hear from you. Feel free to contact me via the comments or the Contact page.

Key Dates

September 1994 – First day of full-time work after graduating from college

September 1997 – Last day of work at first job

November 1997 – First day of work at consulting company

June 1998 – Last day of work at consulting company

August 1998 – First day of work at second consulting company

June 2002 – Last day of work at second consulting company

January 2005 – First day of work at a Professional Employer Organization (PEO)

August 2006 – Last day of work at PEO

January 2007 – First day after being rehired at PEO

June 2009 – Last day of work at PEO

I don’t know what exactly made me want to present the dates in this way, except maybe to show that job transition isn’t uncommon and announce that I, too, am back in the job search.

I started this blog back in July 2002 as a way to document and share resources I’d found online in my job search. If it might be useful for me, it might be useful for you, too. This was before social bookmarking sites like Delicious were around, so some of those earlier posts just contain links.

I expect that blogging here at Get That Job! will increase over the coming months, and I’m going to look for other ways I can provide value to you who read this. As you might already know, I’ve been producing an internet radio series called How I Got My Job, where I share job hunting success stories from other people. The initial motivation was to help listeners keep a positive attitude while in transition. I need that myself now more than ever.

If you haven’t reached out yet, please do. Find me online at my About page. What successful job search strategies have you found?

Thanks again for accompanying me on this journey.

Maybe you’re currently out of work, underemployed, or are simply looking for some guidance on how you can improve your situation. Chances are you’ve struggled with losing hope. You may even be depressed. I know I have been.

That is why one of my favorite topics/labels on this blog has been success stories. These stories have encouraged and inspired me to have a fresh outlook and have even given hope when it has been lost.

Throughout 2008 I am aggressively looking for more success stories to share with others. To that end, I’m launching a new project entitled “How I Got My Job“, in which I record 15-20 minute phone interviews where my guests share how they got one of their jobs and release them to the internet as a podcast. Think of it as Inside the Actor’s Studio, but for job searching instead of acting.

Here’s the basic premise: If you are currently employed or have ever been employed, you have been successful in getting a job. Just as there are certain common threads to each job hunting success story, there are bound to be some unique aspects as well. I look forward to capturing both kinds.

I will most probably record the calls via one of the live conferencing tools that are available and will give out the phone number and other information prior to the set time and date of the interviews. Because the guest will share about one job only, each episode will last about 20 minutes. If it looks like this idea creates an audience, I may look at doing a live show where I take calls. Let’s cross that bridge when we come to it, as they say.

I hope that these interviews will encourage and inspire those who may have lost hope or need a fresh outlook. Maybe something heard during one of these interviews will help someone else in their own search.

So, what do you say? I know you’ve got some stories. Please email me so we can set up a time for one of your interviews: danieljohnsonjr [at] gmail [dot] com

I (and many others) look forward to hearing from you.

Make it a great day!
