As I’ve talked with people where I live, many of them have wondered how Twitter could be used in the job search. Aside from building and communicating a personal brand presence, I’m now recommending TweetMyJobs.com.

I only recently started looking at it, and I really like the benefits for job seekers, as seen via the TweetMyJobs Job Seeker Intro:

• Have access to thousands targeted JobChannels™, so you only get the jobs that match your profile in your feed
• Receive INSTANT notification of new jobs in your Twitter feed or on your mobile device
• Learn of new posting from thousands of leading companies
• Post (and tweet) your resume and custom profile to thousands of recruiters and hiring managers
• Forward jobs to friends
• Receive daily job updates via email or RSS
• Be able to search for jobs using our TweetMap, a Google Maps enabled job tool

Up to now I’ve had some of this on my own, through my own tinkering around. I like that this interface has been developed in such a way that anyone can use it.

As I’ve said previously, I’m not an expert in Ohio Unemployment Benefits. I don’t work for the State of Ohio.  I’m just a guy sharing expertise gained from my own search and experience.

I don’t have to tell job seekers how frustrating it is to make sure you’re doing everything you need to get unemployment benefits. But I hope this post will point you  closer to getting the information you need.

It’s gotten easier to file

It’s gotten a lot easier over the years. Back in 2002, you might appear in person to file for benefits, but the office began encouraging people to file for Ohio unemployment benefits through their hotline: 1-877-644-6562. You’d get a card mailed to you and you’d need to fill it out and mail it back. Or you could call the phone number and file your claim that way. What’s nice these days is that you can still use the phone number, but you can also apply and get Ohio unemployment benefit information online.

SCOTI – should I really care about that?

One of the most popular posts on this blog is this one I wrote almost 4 years ago entitled Ohio SCOTI System and Indeed Salary Search. I’ve gotten emails from readers asking how to register for SCOTI. To be perfectly honest, I don’t think you can. SCOTI doesn’t even exist anymore.

When you file your initial claim, this is something you can ask the person on the phone.  They will probably point you to Ohio Means Jobs.

I initially started this blog as a resource for myself.  As I read and consume content that I think would be worthwhile sharing, I often consider it in that frame of reference.

A coworker just commended me on something through an instant message (IM):

“Thanks, you saved me today with your help.”

It reminded me that I have a document for comments like this, so I added it to the “Quotes about my Performance” document I have.  You should have one, too.

Why you should have this

A document like this is important for several reasons. I’ll include some ones I have, and I encourage you to add to the list in the comments:

• Credibility of your accomplishments. It serves as a record of your accomplishments in someone else’s words.
• Recommendations. Comments like these can be used in promotional material for yourself.
• Cover letters. Specifically, reinforce a point made in a cover letter with a quote from a coworker or client about what you’ve done.
• Encouragement. When you feel down or discouraged, you can refer to this list and remember that you have done something others have found valuable
• References. Chances are if people have praised your work before, they might serve as references. Feel free to remind them what they’ve said if they have forgotten.

Where to find them

I’ve identified some places where you find quotes from others about you.  Feel free to add to the list in the comments:

• E-mail. If you have worked where you send and receive e-mail, you probably have some messages with morsels of praise within.  Find those messages. I have often forwarded work messages with content like this to my personal account for this very purpose.
• Performance Reviews. Chances are, if your company does performance reviews, your boss or manager has said something nice about what you’ve done, and you have a copy of it somewhere.
• LinkedIn Recommendations. If you’re on LinkedIn (and you should be if you’re reading this blog- we should even be connected!), you can ask your connections for recommendations. Not only are they useful on your profile over there, but you can include them in this list.
• Blog/Twitter trackbacks. If someone whose opinion you value highly has commended you in a blog post, on Twitter, or through some other form of “new media,” you can use Google Alerts and Twitter Search to find those comments.
• Audio. I may be reaching a bit, but, let’s say you listen to a podcast or interview, or have been interviewed by someone else.  Chances are you’re being interviewed because someone finds what you have to say important.

Start creating one

There are a few ways you can start creating a list like this:

• Handwritten. Get yourself a notebook and start recording these comments in it.  I used to have a page in a Franklin Planner many years ago for this. This might get time consuming, though, and you’ll have to be careful not to misplace your notebook.
• Word. Create a document in Microsoft Word or other word-processing software and start adding to the list. But you’ll need to save this document somewhere and hope you’re able to keep track of it.
• Online. I use Google Docs for this purpose, since I’m able to carry my Google account with me wherever I go, even if I leave an employer and have to give the computer back.
• UPDATE: Jason mentions that the JibberJobber Job Journal is a great way to do this, and it’s now available in the free level.

When I was looking for my first job out of college, and in many of my subsequent job searches, I’ve often looked at the top business lists for the area where I was looking.

The print editions of the Cincinnati Business Courier and Dayton Business Journal, for example, contain top 25 lists of various companies and individuals in various categories. It looks like these lists can be ordered online, too: here’s the link for Cincinnati Business Lists. From this link you can search other markets and categories, too.

As a job seeker, I’ve personally preferred to spend some time at my public library, searching their archived lists, instead of spending money on these lists.

Have any of you reading this blog had any experience using Craigslist to get a job? I know that the posts show an email address with which you can reply, but it’s a Craigslist email address. Usually company names are omitted in these postings.

I did see that you can subscribe to an RSS feed of search results in Google Reader or some other feed reader, which is pretty cool.

2. Mouseover the results and the map will show its location.
3. Click on a job listing for more information on the job and how to apply and email the job listing to yourself if you want.

Note that the locations are approximate. For example, if the job location says “San Francisco”, then the pin in the map will point to the center of San Francisco – it’s actual location might be elsewhere.

I firmly believe in using social media and new media tools in our job searches; tools like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Craigslist. These and several others make it easier than ever to connect with people.

Having said that, we still need to be careful, as Steven Rothberg from College Recruiter.com mentions:

Front page news in the Minneapolis newspapers over the past couple of days has been the killing of Katherine Ann Olson. While any murder is tragic, this one is noteworthy to employers and job seekers alike because it appears to be related to the victim’s use of Craiglist to find a nanny position.

Ms. Olson was looking for a nanny job. She had successfully used Craigslist before and so searched it again. She found an ad of interest responded. She told her roommate that she was going to meet the family from the ad. After she didn’t come home, police initiated a search and found her dead in the trunk of her car at a park in Burnsville, Minnesota late Friday night.

I believe in the power of meeting up face-to-face with others, but I also strongly believe that these meetings must occur in public places like food courts at shopping malls or coffee shops, especially when meeting up for the first time.

No, I haven’t left this blog dormant. In fact, nearly every day over the past month or so, I’ve thought about you who stop by to read. Do you know about Google Alerts? They are one set of tools in your new media toolkit that can help you in your job search.

Google Alerts let you find out about new web pages on topics of interest. I have them set up for my own blog properties, my name, the names of others, and other projects, etc.

For a job search, you should set up Google Alerts for companies you are targeting. Alternatively, you could set up alerts to keep current on what’s going on in a particular career, especially if you’re looking to make a change.

You do need to have a Google account, which is free, in order to set these up.

Welcome to the world of mashups. I first came to understand that term as applied to mixing up different kinds of music when I started listening to podcasts back in July 2005. Now the term applies to mixing up all kinds of media, including feeds from different websites.

Have you heard of Yahoo! Pipes? This is a website that lets you set up and create your own mashups of information from different websites. For example, there’s a pipe that finds videos on YouTube related to items on the front page of the New York Times. Another pipes searches YouTube for music videos for the top 10 songs found on iTunes.

An interesting thing about these pipes is that you can subscribe to the RSS feed in an aggregator such as Google Reader or Bloglines.

While browsing Yahoo! Pipes earlier today, I found some that others have created that relate to job searching. Check them out, and, by all means, use.

I just found out from Jason Alba that tomorrow is the first birthday of JibberJobber, a career toolset used by many – including yours truly – to manage aspects of a job search and networking relationships. I have yet to delve into the unchartered territories within the tool, but I have to say that it is EXCELLENT for managing the minute details of a job search.

Jason wrote a great article about changing the way we approach job searching and career management:

I frequently think about how we think of our job transitions – we are supposed to have lots of them during our career.

I’m completely intrigued by the people who have forgotten what a forced transition is like, or by those that feel totally secure in their job (or their ability to find a new job) – and their reactions to a “job search.”

I’m finding that Career Management was easier when I was looking for work. Now that I’m working, it’s harder and harder for me to stay in that mindset. I’m spending more time thinking about projects at work than my own career management.

But I try to do a little bit every day to manage my career, whether it’s setting up a lunch appointment with a friend, or use my LinkedIn URL as I comment on this and many other posts. I also maintain a portfolio blog. I also look for other ways to share what I’m learning about career management.

I don’t want to be misled into a false sense of job security. Right now work is going strong, but I still need to keep my eyes on the big picture.

Chris at LifeHack.org recently shared some thoughts on effective networking (“Meet People NOT Business Cards – lifehack.org“). If you’re like me, you’ve tended to use these events as opportunities to amass a big collection of business cards. But that’s not the point of the meeting, really, is it? Here are my comments to the article:

I hear you, Chris. I just read something along the same lines in Keith Ferrazzi’s book Never Eat Alone: And Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time. If you collect a bunch of business cards without making a personal connection, you’re left with a phone list from which to make cold calls.

Now, let’s transfer these thoughts into collecting contacts on internet social networks, okay?

I see people blindly adding friends on social networking sites like MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter, and others, the same way people collect business cards. There are various reasons to do this; the most obvious is to make themselves look important, which is something that motivates some people. If people see someone with lots of contacts, they will begin to think of them as an expert in their field. I’m a bit torn on this myself, to be honest.

Just remember that the personal connection is what matters. What are you doing right now to make and reinforce the personal connection with your contacts? What are your thoughts on the effectiveness of amassing large numbers of contacts?

While driving home from work yesterday, I listened to the Buckeye Drive Time podcast, #122. If you’re not familiar with the format, Tom Rockhold shares an Ohio moment, three podsafe songs – songs that independent music artists have permitted to be played on a podcast, and three podcast promos – audio commercials for other podcasts. It’s designed to be a drive-time alternative to mainstream radio.

One of the promos I heard yesterday was for Find Your Ideal Career, which I found really intriguing. Michael Spremulli helps college students figure out what they want and discover their ideal career path, sometimes referred to as the “Simon Cowell of personality profiling”. It looks like the podcast is brand new; I haven’t listened to it myself yet.

I’d have to imagine that the show could be useful to anyone wanting some more advice on their own career assessment, whether you’re in college or not. Check it out and let me know what you think!

I was searching for legal information on employee agreements and came upon the Employee Rights Center at Findlaw.com. I must check this stuff out. It looks like they have resources available to the public related to all aspects of the job searching and employment process.

Speaking of employee agreements, and the reason why I did the search in the first place, I’m wondering what the legal ramifications of striking out certain items of an employee agreement are.

Anyone out there with knowledge in this area?

Four years ago when I started blogging, I had no clue about RSS feeds and syndication. I’d just go through my blogroll and manually check to see if someone posted something new.

Now there are so many ways to aggregate the “stuff” you want to consume on the internet, saving time from having to visit each website to see if new content is available. I used Amphetadesk for awhile, and I’ve been using Bloglines for the longest time. Over the past 16 months, I’ve used Juice as my primary podcast receiver.

While going through the visitor logs, I saw a referral from FeedRaider, so I decided to check out that service. I like you can show items from several feeds on one page and set up multiple pages as a way to categorize your content.

To that end, let me tell you about two feeds I’ve set up for this website:

•  General RSS Feed Goodness
•  Hear the Posts via Podcast

The second item, via Feed2Podcast, uses text-to-speech to create an mp3 of the posts you read here. So, whether you want to read or listen to the content, it’s up to you. And, of course, you can always come here directly to see all the Get That Job! goodness.

Update: Clarifying expecations.

One of the requirements when you file an unemployment claim in Ohio is that you sign up for their Sharing Career Opportunities & Training Information (SCOTI) system (UPDATE: The website now directs to no longer directs anywhere. Check out Ohio Means Jobs). Essentially, you get put into the system with your basic background, and, as participating companies search for individuals, you get contacted by SCOTI to call in to see if there is a suitable match. Receiving unemployment benefits is contingent upon your participation; i.e., if you don’t call, you may not get your unemployment compensation.

I recevied a letter over the weekend from the SCOTI system, and I just finished talking with the representative. The company is looking for an Application Developer with 3-5 years of experience with COBOL, CICS, JCL, and SQL. I don’t have that specific type of experience, and so it was determined that I’m not a suitable match.

One thing that does bother me about that position is the annual salary that the job was offering: $18,335. That sounded really low, and I mentioned that during the phone conversation, but the rep said that’s what it was.

After I hung up, I used the Indeed Salary Search to check whether I was right, and here are the results:

If the rate was really an hourly rate of $18.335/hour ($38,136/year), it would be a lot more reasonable, but still less than the average.

Hopefully the next opportunity will be a more suitable match. What are your thoughts?

I’ve been “teleworking” for over a year now, and I suppose it’s easy to take it for granted. This article from Monster reminds me that I might want to mention certain things in my resume or during the interview with respect to my success at “teleworking”.
