13 Nov 09 Why will I be glad that I hired you one week from your start date? – NaPodPoMo Day 13

As part of NaPodPoMo, I’m releasing a video (preferred) or audio (if needed) segment every day in November 2009, where I’m practicing answering a typical interviewing question.  Will my answers be perfect? Probably not.  This experiment has the following objectives:

  • Practice answering typical interviewing questions
  • Produce content for the internet on a consistent basis
  • Develop some rudimentary skill in video production

Here, then, for your enjoyment, is the next installment of the series, as Day 13 of 30:

Why will I be glad that I hired you one week from your start date?

Special thanks to Rainie for suggesting this question via Twitter.

The background music for this series is called “Dodging Buses” by Derek K. Miller. Check out his Penmachine Podcast.

Really quite thankful I've never been asked that question in a interview. Though if I am asked this question I'll try your response. After all a week isn't very long to have made actual changes or to have achieved some successes but you can certainly shown enthusiasm for the role.

Yeah, it kinda caught me by surprise when Rainie suggested it.

Hey Dan, I thought you did a great job with this question.

I was asked this question in an interview for a newly created position that required organization skills, familiarity with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, and someone with a creative/analytical mind to develop monitoring and tracking tools.

The question is really an opportunity to express or reiterate the skills and experiences you bring to the position. Questions like these are why it's important to research the company/department you're interviewing for and to understand how your skills apply to the position you're applying for.

While it's an unusual question, I hope it helps people start thinking about why they ARE a good candidate for the job and how to relay that information in clear language to the interviewer.

Hey, Rainie! Thanks for commenting. It was a great question, and, like you said, it really forces a job seeker to have done research about the company and know why he or she is a great candidate.
